策展實績 > 驚蟄憶趣 Insects Awakening, Time Recalling
Jīngzhé is the 3rd of the 24 solar terms in the traditional East Asian calendars. As spring thunder roars, animals awake to welcome spring, and the exhibition opens. Borrowing the image of Jīngzhé, the exhibition tries to recall the development of Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition.
The Department of Sculpture in Taiwan University of Arts has been holding the Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition since 2010, exhibiting around 100 pieces of sculptures annually. Representing the year’s creating situation, the sculpture’s succession and the department’s education, the award-winning artworks would be collected and exhibited by the department. On display in wòwò Aesthetics, this year’s Exhibition of Shoebox Sculpture Collection reviews the exhibition’s development, the award’s establishment and the stories of the artworks.
Among the awarded artworks, they on one hand meet the award’s spirit, on the other hand feature various subjects, skills and designs, which can be sensed in the materials, including metal, stone, wood and mixed media.
For instance, LIN Chao Yu expresses the relationship between workout and desire with mockery in his artwork. SHE Wen Ying demonstrates the cat’s depression after it is fixed in her creation. HSING Li Yun shows women’s sensitive senses through forging copper. LIN Meng Hsuan shows her reflection on love and desire through the fragile pottery clay. LIN Kuan Chun demonstrates breading humorously with stone from a modern perspective. Every shoebox sculpture includes certain stories, memories and attitudes, reflecting the creator.
Nowadays, the Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition is extended into cultural and creative industries, educational promotions, international interactions, artistic experiment, etc. Exhibited in wòwò Aesthetics this year, we hope that while new friends learn about shoebox sculpture, its stories would be reviewed and passed down.
